<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve fixing, etc., under the optimum fixing conditions even on various types of recording materials while improving usability by highly accurately discriminating the type of the recording material. <P>SOLUTION: An image reading sensor 123 includes a reflecting LED 301, an LED 303 which is disposed opposite from recording material 304 and detects transmitted light quantity, a CMOS area sensor 211, and an image forming lens 303. Light from the reflecting LED 301 as a light source is emitted to the surface of the recording material 304. The light reflected from the recording material 304 is condensed via the lens 303 and forms an image in the CMOS area sensor 211. In such a case, a diffusing plate or a diffusible light guide is used between a transmitting LED 302 and the recording material 304.
