PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device in which limitation of image display accuracy due to the size or shape of a pixel electrode is eliminated as much as possible. SOLUTION: The image display device includes: an optical modulator 25 having an electro-optic effect by which refractive index changes according to electric-field intensity; a plurality of control points 26 disposed on the surface of the optical modulator 25 and capable of being altered in positional relation with the optical modulator 25; and an electric field control section 22 constituted so that a pre-alteration electric field displacement plane generated by voltages applied to the plurality of control points 26 before the alteration of the positional relation and a post-alteration electric field displacement plane formed by voltages applied to the plurality of control points 26 after the alteration of the positional relation are synthesized and thereby an electric field displacement plane having a specific image pattern is formed within the optical modulator 25.
