PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a high-performance flameproof fiber having low contents of specific elements and a carbon fiber and to provide methods for producing them. SOLUTION: The flameproof fiber has 1,000 ppm Si content in the fiber and <5 ppm Ca content. The carbon fiber has 1,000 ppm Si content in the fiber and <5 ppm Ca content. The method for producing the flameproof fiber comprises flameproofing a precursor fiber in an atmosphere of a flameproofing furnace having <300μg/m<SP>3</SP>Si content and <0.5μg/m<SP>3</SP>Ca content.
