PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control system for an internal combustion engine capable of appropriately correcting an ignition timing, controlling the number of cylinders in operation (selecting a partial-cylinder operation or an all-cylinder operation), and suppressing torque shock. SOLUTION: In the control system, knocking generated in the internal combustion engine is detected. A retarding coefficient KIGKN is calculated based on the results of the knocking detection. A moderation calculation of the retarding coefficient KIGKN is performed during the all-cylinder operation, from which a learning value KIGKREFE or KIGKREF is calculated. In the partial-cylinder operation, the retarding coefficient KIGKN is set at a value obtained by adding a prescribed additional value DKIGKCS to the learning value KIGKREFE or KIGKREF.
