The present invention provides systems and methods of authenticating genuine products and detecting counterfeits. The said systems consist of a myriad of services and clients, including at least one Service Registry and User Authentication Service through which the different clients and services, acting as agents within the system, locate and authenticate each other. Genuine products include taggants that have a short, random, concealed string and a visible string of characters which together are used when identifying authentic items. Recipients of items are supplied with the concealed string and a means of matching it with the visible string and thus the product on which it appears, for use in authenticating received items. |
