A ground based helicopter flight simulator has means for simulating ground resonance in which a signal which is a function of simulated rotor speed and is a maximum when the rotor speed corresponds to the maximum ground resonance, and a threshold signal adjustable by an instructor are compared by a summing amplifier, and a signal is transmitted through a diode in series with the amplifier when the resonance signal is greater than the threshold signal to a relay which initiates oscillation of the trainee pilot's compartment and the flight instruments. The amplifier also has inputs corresponding to aircraft weight, cross-wind speed, aircraft lateral velocity, bank angle and ambient temperature, which affect ground resonance. The relay also applies a signal to a delay timer which, if the trainee pilot has not corrected for the resonance within five seconds, operates crash signals. The relay also introduces a hold input into the amplifier, which in effect lowers the threshold of resonance. A switch in series with the diode is only closed near the ground, so that resonance effects are only simulated near the ground, and the threshold signal can be varied by the instructor between a maximum at which resonance is never simulated, and a minimum at which it is always simulated on take-off.</p> |
