A resistor element 36 comprises an insulating base carrying a coating of nickel-chromium-iron alloy having a film coating thereon of platinum, rhodium or iridium. The coatings may be applied by vacuum deposition as may end terminals of gold or nickel chromium. Details of composition, thickness and resistance values are given. The insulating base may be of phenolic or epoxy resin or a ceramic such as steatite, alumina, berylia, various kinds of glass or quartz. The contact 35 in the potentiometer shown may be of carbon, carbon-tetrafluorethylene resin or a gold-palladium-silver-copper - platinum alloy. The potentiometer including the driving worm gear 28, 25 is enclosed in a casing of diallyl phthalate.
