The invention comprises compounds of the formula in which R and R1 represent the same or different radicals linked with the phosphorus atom directly or via a sulphur or oxygen atom, said radicals being (a) aliphatic radicals which may be substituted and/or branched and/or unsaturated, or (b) groups of the formula in which R1 and R2 represent hydrogen atoms, alkyl or cycloalkyl groups, R11 represents hydrogen or a straight or branched-chain aliphatic, radical which may be substituted and/or unsaturated; and X is sulphur or oxygen. The radicals R and R1 preferably denote alkyl, chloralkyl, alkenyl, alkoxyalkenyl, alkylmercaptoalkenyl, alkoxy, chloralkoxy or alkylmercapto groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms. They may be prepared by reacting hydroxyphthalimides of the general formula with phosphoric, phosphonic, phosphinic, thionophosphoric, thionophosphonic or thionophosphinic acid ester monohalides of the formula The symbols R, R1, R11 and X have the same meaning as before and that represents a halogen atom. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of acid-binding agents such as alkali metal alcoholates and carbonates and also tertiaryamines. It is also possible to first prepare the alkali metal or ammonium salts of the hydroxy-phthalimides and then react them with the acid ester halides of formula III. It is also convenient to carry out the process at slightly to moderately elevated temperatures and in the presence of inert organic solvents such as low boiling alcohols, ketones and nitriles, and aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons which may be chlorinated, and also dimethyl formamide. Examples are give in which the R and R1 groups are selected from methyl, ethyl, methoxy, ethoxy, iso-propoxy and dimethyl amino, and in which the R11 group is selected from hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl and allyl, whilst X is oxygen or sulphur. The compounds are useful as pest control agents (see Division A5).ALSO:Pesticidal compositions which comprise a solid or liquid diluent or carrier in admixture with a compound of the general formula in which R and R1 represent the same or different radicals linked with the phosphorus atom directly or via a sulphur or oxygen atom, said radicals being (a) aliphatic radicals which may be substituted and/or branched and/or unsaturated, or (b) groups of the formula in which R1 and R2 represent hydrogen atoms, alkyl or cycloalkyl groups, R11 represents hydrogen or a straight or branched-chain aliphatic radical which may be substituted and/or unsaturated: and X is sulphur or oxygen (see Division C2). Examples of solid carriers include talc, chalk, bentonite and clay and liquid carriers include water, alcohols, ketones and liquid hydrocarbons. The compounds of the above general formula may be used in conjunction with each other or with known insecticides and fertilisers.
