[Also in Division F1] In a heat exchanger comprising a stationary spiral fluid flow pipe 16 disposed within a rotary hollow horizontal shaft 9, heat exchange is effected between air flowing over the outer surface of the shaft 9 and a liquid or gaseous fluid 15 flowing through the pipe 16 by means of a heat transfer liquid 20, e.g. water or turbine oil which is sealingly contained by rings 17 (see Fig. 5) within the shaft 9 up to a level 19. On rotation the liquid 20 is forced centrifugally outwards such that the pipe 16 is completely immersed in a layer of liquid. The shaft 9 has a plurality of equally spaced vertical discs 10 joined to its outer surface. A casing 11 partly surrounds the discs 10 so that on rotation of the shaft 9 air is forcedly directed over the outer surface of the shaft from a direction 12, towards a direction 13. In a modification, the pipe 16 may be bent in a zig-zag or other complex shape (Figs. 6, 7).
