An expanding mandrel gripper for holding a gear P comprises a collet having a work gripping section 24, a relatively thick rim 27 and a flared inter-connecting section 28, the collet having longitudinal slits 29 which may be filled with a rubber-like material. The collet is expanded by a tapered end 32 of a rod 33 which is connected to an arbor 17. The arbor is moved by an external hydraulically operated device. The collet is spring biased by springs 44 to lift the gear P off a seating 16 when the expander rod 33 is released. Holes 48 are present to facilitate removal of swarf from between the collet and a surrounding portion of a nose section 14. A body portion 10 is attached to a spindle 11. |
