In a planetary gear assembly (see Divisions F1 and F2), the planet gears are formed of an alloy comprising 6% aluminium, 40% vanadium, the balance being titanium. This alloy is considerably lighter than steel, has a strength comparable with steel and may be given the same hardness by nitrogen case hardening. |
