Recovery of alginic acid or salts therof of from brown - algae

The brown algae are first extracted with an aqueous phosphate solution, the so-obtained solution is then spun into a precipitant and the liquid contained in the so-produced fibres is finally removed therefrom by pressure. - Alkali salts of alginic acids are water-soluble and are used as jelly-formers and thickeners in foods, ice creams, jams; as fillers and substrates in cosmetics, e.g. creams, tablets.
