<p>1296892 Recovery of nuclear fuel metal values BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 16 March 1970 [14 March 1969] 12531/70 Heading C1A Metals are recovered from materials containing them by treating the materials with a reagent which produces volatile compounds of the metals, wherein the materials lie in the form of discrete pieces in a container and fluid containing the reagent is passed through at fluctuating rates so as to agitate the mass and disintegrate at least some of the pieces, which may be, for example, zirconium or steel clad uranium or uranium oxide. The fluid may be composed of an inert gas, e.g. argon, containing halogen, inter-halogen, hydrogen halide, or oxygen. In the example using the apparatus of the Figure Zr clad uranium oxide is agitated in vessel 10 at 25 cycles per minute by a mixture of hydrogen chloride and argon which is passed from sources 20 via the compression chamber 17 and controlled by timer 23 which activates valves 21, 22. Effluent gases, including ZrCl 4 are passed via filter 16 and line 24 to a cooling tower 25.</p> |
