A process for the determination of hydrogen peroxide or of substances which react with the liberation of hydrogen peroxide or of peroxidase or of peroxidate active substances using the reaction of hydrogen peroxide with a chromogen, which reaction is catalysed by peroxidase or peroxidate active substances, utilises as chromogen a compound of the general formula: optionally with a modifier of general formula: in which the groups R 1 , which may be the same or different, are lower alkyl radicals, R 2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical or together with Y represents a fused benzene or napthalene nucleus, X is a sulphur or oxygen atom, an alkylated imino radical or a vinylene radical, Y is a methine radical which together with R 2 can form a benzene or naphthalene nucleus, Ar is a benzene or naphthalene nucleus, V is an amino or hydroxyl group, V1 is a hydrogen atom or an amine or hydroxyl group, W is an amino, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group, W1 is a hydrogen atom or an amino, carboxylic acid or sulphonic acid group or an alkali metal salt thereof. Diagnostic agents comprise, for the determination of hydrogen peroxide or of substances which react with the liberation of hydrogen peroxide, peroxidase or a peroxidate active substance and the chromogen; for the determination of haemoglobin or of other peroxidate active substances, hydrogen peroxide or a substance or substances forming hydrogen peroxide and the chromogen. The diagnostic agents may be in the form of solutions, test papers or films on foil.
