The appts. to compress empty plastics containers, for disposal and recycling, uses an electric kettle (1) or the like with a cylindrical feed hopper (4) and a heater at the base to heat the water or other liquid to 80-95 deg C. A grille (3) supports the package (5) to be reduced. An upper opening allows a piston (8) to be pushed through and compress the package softened by the hot water. The compressed plug (9) of the package material is set rapidly by immersion in cold water.
