Polymers consisting of units of formula where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic or heterocyclic radical, are obtained by dissolving at least one tosylhydrazone of an aromatic or heterocyclic aldehyde in a heterogeneous mixture of a liquid containing a solvent for the polymer to be obtained and a liquid immiscible with the first liquid and preferably a solvent for the starting material, adding an alkali metal hydroxide to obtain a strongly coloured reaction mixture, refluxing with stirring until the colour disappears, and then precipitating the polymer in a non-solvent liquid. In examples, polymers are obtained from benzaltosylhydrazone, p-bromobenzaltosylhydrazone, oÀ, m- and p-methoxybenzaltosylhydrazones, α- and #-naphthaltosylhydrazones, 9-anthraltosylhydrazone and the tosylhydrazone of m-pyridine-aldehyde, and from mixtures of benzaltosylhydrazone with pbromobenzaltosylhydrazone, m-methoxybenzaltosylhydrazone and p-chlorobenzaltosylhydrazone; the reactions are carried out in mixtures of benzene, methanol and water. |
