A novel nucleic acid (I) contains at least one phage resistance mechanism and is selected from: (i) a 817 bp DNA sequence from the genome of Lactococcus lactis; (ii) DNA that hybridises to the DNA of (i) or its fragments; (iii) corresponding mRNA or cDNA sequences; or (iv) DNA highly homologous to the DNA of (i).
