Butadiene is homo- or copolymerized to a polymer with a high cis-1,4-content using a catalyst comprising (a) an organometallic compound of Groups I to III; (b) an organic complex, carboxylic salt or carbonyl of nickel or cobalt; and (c) a boron trifluoride complex with water or a mineral acid. In the example, butadiene is homopolymerized using a catalyst containing the following components: (a) tripropylaluminium; (b) nickel octanoate; and (c) BF 3 .H 3 PO 4 , .2H 2 O and .H 2 O, while a comparative example employs BF 3 .2CH 3 .COOH, .CH 3 COOH, butyric acid, .2 propylene glycol, and .2-ethoxyethanol as the component (c). |
