[Also in Division A4] A windscreen washer pump comprises a diaphragm 4 moved on its discharge stroke by a spring 5 and on its suction stroke by vacuum, or, alternatively, by hand, a switch controlling a windscreen wiper motor being closed at the end of the suction stroke by a conducting strip 22 bridging spring-loaded contacts 23, Fig. 1, and towards the end of the discharge stroke the outlet port 10 is closed by the slide valve action of sleeve and projection members 39, 40 on the diaphragm and pump casing, a restricted discharge past the inlet valve 15 permitting a slow discharge movement of the diaphragm during which a lost motion coupling 36 between the diaphragm and sleeve member 21 moves member 21 to move strip 22 out of engagement with contacts 23 to open the switch, so that the wipers operate for a predetermined time after discharge of liquid has ceased. A taper on strip 22 reacts with the spring- loading of contacts 23 to provide a snap-action. A projection 43 in sleeve 39 seals port 10 at the end of the discharge stroke to prevent backflow through the suction and delivery lines. In the Fig. 4 embodiment (not shown), the projection 40 is formed on the diaphragm and the port 10 is in the bottom of a recess. Member 21 and pump casing port 1 are of insulating material. The pump casing has a threaded portion 32 for mounting it in a washer liquid reservoir. The seating of the inlet valve may be grooved to provide the restricted discharge towards the end of the discharge stroke. The projection 40 and sleeve 39 have bevelled guiding surfaces. |
