1,256,994. Continuous casting. SOUTHWIRE CO. 30 April, 1970 [2 May, 1969], No. 20887/70. Heading B3F. A process of continuously casting metal includes the steps of engaging the peripheral groove of a rotating casting wheel 10 with a continuous flexible band 11 to form an arcuate mould, pouring molten metal into the mould, cooling the metal in the mould as the metal passes around the casting wheel until the metal has at least partially solidified, and is characterized by disengaging the flexible band from the peripheral groove of the casting wheel to open the mould and applying coolant directly on to the metal to further cool the metal. The cast product is passed from the wheel 10 to a roller train where manifolds 21, 21a spray coolant through nozzles 35 on all sides of the cast product. The water supply to the nozzles can be regulated by valves V1 to V4. Some of the lower rollers (27) of the train are powered and the upper rollers 26 are adjustably spaced from the lower rollers. A pair of withdrawing pinch rolls 36 may be provided. |
