Compounds of the general formula and their acid addition salts, where n is 1 or 2, R is H or Me, R 1 is H or carbobenzoxy with the proviso that when R 1 is H and R is Me the compounds are in the form of their salts with strong acids, are prepared by reacting an N-carbobenzoxy derivative of glutamine or asparaginine with 4,41-dimethoxybenzhydrol in the presence of an acid catalyst e.g. cone. H 2 SO 4 , BF 3 , ZnCl 2 , AlCl 3 or an organic sulphonic acid, or glutamine or asparagine with 4,41-dimethoxybenzhydrol in the presence of a molar amount of cone. H 2 SO 4 or BF 3 . The protected aspargine or glutamine may be used in normal peptide syntheses or the amide group of asparagine or glutamine in a suitably protected peptide containing such residues may be protected by reaction with 4,41-dimethoxy benzhydrol as above. The amido protecting group may be removed by acid.
