A machine tool comprises a bed 10, a column 12 horizontally movable along the bed and supporting a vertically movable slide 14 which in turn supports a horizontally movable carriage 16 that carries an indexable two-position turret 18 having two oppositely facing spindles 54. One spindle faces towards a work support tube 22 and the other faces towards a tool transfer head 84 and magazine 60 that move with the column 12. The magazine 60 comprises adjustably spaced indexable racks 64 that presents tools to an extendable gripper 98 mounted on a rotatable platen 90. The platen 90 forms part of the vertically adjustable transfer head 84 and during rotation of the platen 90 the gripper 98 is rotated through 90 degrees to present the axis of a tool parallel to the axis of spindle 54. The tool is picked-off from the gripper 98 by one of two clamps 118 or 120, the other clamp being used for the tool being removed from the spindle 54. The two clamps 118 and 120 are carried on a carriage 110 vertically movable between two stops and which is movable horizontally towards and away from spindle 54 by carriage 114. The work support table 22 may comprise separate tables 122, 124 so that while one workpiece is being machined another can be removed and replaced. The tables 122, 124 may be tiltable about a horizontal axis or universally tiltable. The machine includes means for clearing away metal cuttings comprising a screw conveyer feeding into a receptacle. The machine may be automatic or semi-automatic programme controlled. |
