<p>The main radiation shield has an external cladding of heat insulating material e.g. sand, within an outer steel jacket. The central container is divided into a number of cylindrical compartments embedded in a body of high thermal conductivity and arranged in a circle around a central empty space. The thermally conductive material may be cast in situ or of powdered material poured in. The configuration reduces self induced heating in the material and such heat as is developed is conducted into the heat sink.</p> |
