[Also in Division F2] A wheel cover disc 10, Fig. 2, comprises a plurality of axially inwardly extending and circumferentially spaced spring fingers 26 having ends 24 adapted to resiliently engage the radially inwardly facing surface of the rim of a wheel 12, and a wire annulus 44 interconnecting the finger ends 24, circumferentially contractible by means of an over-centre toggle mechanism, Fig. 4 or Fig. 6, to withdraw the fingers from engagement with the wheel rim. The toggle mechanism of Fig. 4 consists of two links 46, 48, pivotally connected at spaced positions 54, 60, on a lever 56 and each having fastened thereon one end of a wire forming the annulus 44. Lever 56 is rotatable in a clockwise direction to bring the ends of the wire closer together, thereby contracting the annulus. The spring fingers 26 may be integral with a ring 28 retained by the cover 10 by crimping the cover's periphery over the ring, and in the embodiment of Fig. 6, the ring comprises a flange 66 on to which one end 68 of the wile 44 is fastened, the opposing end 70 being fastened to a plate 74 pivotally mounted at 76 on a rotatable stud 78. The stud has a non-circular socket (82), Fig. 7 (not shown), for receiving a turning tool. A flange portion 84 of plate 74 abuts the flange 66 to retain the plate when in its " over-centre " position. Instead of engaging the safety groove 22 of the wheel rim spring fingers (128), Fig. 13 (not shown), may be formed on the axially inwardly turned periphery of a cover (122) to engage the edge 40 of the tyre bead retaining flange. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), a wire (90) links circumferentially spaced T-shaped bars (116) having cross-pieces seated on adjacent spring fingers (92). The cover may be stamped out of steel sheet. Alternatively, Fig. 16 (not shown), the cover may be of plastics, the spring fingers being formed on a metal ring (150) screwed to the cover. The cover may accommodate a wheel balancing weight (138), Fig. 13 (not shown).</p> |
