A horizontal elongated casing has a cross section about an axial vertical plane of two almost complete ellipses truncated by their junction in that plane but with the curved section between the lowest point of each ellipse and the lower line of the junction plane being the arc of a large radius circle. Within the casing is an inner shell which is an inverted "U" whose vertical side walls are a sealed fit along the floor of the casing and curve over to the flat top to which in turn the upper junction line of the two part ellipses is sealed. Vertical, transverse party walls divide the casing and shell into separate condenser and evaporator chambers respectively and these have openings below a water level fixed by central sills in the evaporator compartments in the shell through which feed water (seawater) passes progressively from chamber to chamber with reducing pressure, the vapour passing through a droplet trap in the top of the shell into the condenser chambers bounded by the shell and the casing, heat exchangers pass along the whole length of the casing
