[Also in Division B3] A cutting machine comprises a reciprocable blade 16, sharpening means 47, 48 disposed on either side of the blade 16, means for disengaging the blade from the material to be cut, means 80, 81 for moving one sharpening device 47 into contact with the blade 16 during disengagement and the other 48 into contact during subsequent re-engagement, and actuating means for the sharpening means. A frame 23 bearing the blade 16 and its driving motor 21 is slidable on rods 24 by means of a cable 46, to engage or disengage the blade; a motor 35 governed by a feedback resolver 36 may rotate a box 37 supporting the blade 16 in guide means to change the heading of the blade, the axis of rotation being adjustable between two alternatives by lateral movement of the guide means under the action of a solenoid 44. Grinding wheels 47, 48 are supported on a vertically fixed plate 50, rotatable in synchronism with the box 37 through gear means, Fig. 8 (not shown), including a ball spline 61. Birfurcated wheel supports 55, 57 are pivoted to a frame 52 located on a stud 51, a spring loaded detent 53 biasing the frame 52 into the position of Fig. 3, wherein the wheels 47, 48 are spaced from the blade 16. For sharpening, a solenoid 80 or 81 is activated to pivot the frame 52 and bring the wheel 48 or 47 into engagement with the blade, a spring-comprising linkage 85 ensuring the correct grinding pressure irrespective of wheel/blade wear; one wheel 47 operates during the blade up-stroke, and the other 48 during the downstroke. The wheels 47, 48 are driven by a motor 68 through a belt 69, intermediate members (71)-(75), Fig. 5-6 (not shown), and a further belt 76 during their operation. The support rods 24 depend from a plate 25, transversely slidable above a longitudinally fed input sheet (14), Fig. 1 (not shown), and numerical control apparatus (49) automatically governs the cutting process and sharpening cycles.</p>
