Appts. comprises a motor-driven abrasive disc containing resin-bonded silicon and corundum particles, a feed mechanism for applying a piece of wood onto the abrasive disc and an eccentric drive for the axial reciprocation of the end of the piece of wood pressed against the disc, so as to generate sufficient friction to give a temp. of 280 degrees-320 degrees C. and thus produce smouldering of the wood without flame.
