Reaching device with a basic support 1 which can be attached to a lifting mast, a displaceable load-bearing member 2, a pair of four-bar mechanisms with a common bar body 3, and adjustment means 4, 5 for adjusting the four- bar mechanisms. Bars on those sides of the four-bar mechanisms which are remote from one another form the basic support 1 and the load-bearing support 2. The lengths of the bars 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 are such that the load-bearing support 2 is guided in translation. Further displacement of the bar body is compensated for by the second four-bar mechanism on the side of the said bar body, with the result that the load-bearing support can be displaced along a straight path which is transverse with respect to the lifting mast. Straight guides are not required. The distance between mutually opposite bars of each of the four-bar mechanisms is greatest when the moment exerted by a load is virtually at its highest level, with the result that the maximum load on the structure is relatively low. <IMAGE>
