Powered typewriter has a cylindrical type carrier, on which the type is arranged in rows and columns, and an interacting printing hammer whose impact strength is adjustable in relation to the size of type being printed. In this way a uniform printed image is formed of such a high quality that the product is suitable for automatic reading. The swivel axis of the printing hammer lever is located on an arm of an adjusting rocker arm which is itself swivable about an axis. A control lever is used to apply a variable load via a power drive to another arm of the rocker arm corresponding to the different impact strengths required for the type to be printed.
