The collet consists of a tapered tube with longitudinal slots forming spring fingers attached to a collar (18a). The outer surface of the collet is formed in a series of stepped diameters and the finger ring (11) is fitted over the collet on a matching diameter. The bore of the collet is tapered and fits over a matching shaft (5) which has a parallel portion (5a) mounted in bearings in a housing (10). The outer end of the shaft (5a) has a toothed rack which is engaged by a pinion operated by a lever mounted in the housing. Rotating the lever forces the shaft (5) into the collet and expands the ring (11) to the required diameter.
