PURPOSE: To provide a method that activates impact-responsive devices in vehicles within a desired time limit in case of an impact event in need of device activation by discriminating between impact events in need and in no need of device activation. CONSTITUTION: A single-point sensing device senses the deceleration of a vehicle during an impact event. The sensed deceleration is integrated into the vehicle velocity. The velocity is then integrated into the vehicle displacement. The difference between the deceleration and a preselected deceleration bias is integrated into a residual energy density. The residual density is compared to a threshold residual energy density from an activation threshold line predefined on the basis of the impact characteristics of the vehicle. A residual energy density equal to or greater than the activation threshold line activates an impact-responsive device. |
