PURPOSE:To improve the contrast of displaying without requiring any polarizing plate in a guest-host type liquid crystal display device wherein optically anisotropic flexible high polymer films are used as substrates by using a specific phase transition type liquid crystal compsn. CONSTITUTION:In a display device wherein a cholesteric-nematic phase transion type liquid crystal compsn. 10 is sealed between upper, lower electrode substrates 5, 6 consisting of optically anisotropic high polymer films (a symbol 7 is thin film electrodes and 8 is oriented films), the compsn. obtd. by mixing (A) a polychromatic dye (e.g.; ''D16 '' produced by BDH), (B) a nematic liquid crystal (e.g.; ''E43 '' produced by BDH) and (C) a chiral material (e.g.; cholestric nanoate) at the ratios satisfying the relation expressed by 1<=d/p<=1.25 (P is the spiral pitch of the liquid crystal compsn.; (d) is the distance between the upper and lower electrodes) is used for said compsn. 10. |
