Fluidised bed apparatus for the combustion or gasification of large size coal or fuel of low calorific value comprises a container (1) divided into an upper section and a lower plenum chamber (7) by a horizontal plate (2), from which standpipes (4) for introducing fluidising gas extend upwardly with their upper ends arranged to lie on an inclined plane or planes, e.g. an inverted cone, and a spout inlet (3) located on the plate below the upper ends of the standpipes to introduce spouting gas.
