A casting-ladle outlet (3) provided with a sliding gate nozzle (9) is sealed by filling the outlet cavity with a free-flowing refractory mass (20) via the sliding gate nozzle (9), a covering (13) being formed on the surface of the charge (20) and this covering being broken by the melt when the sliding gate nozzle (9) is opened and the mass (20) flows out. To create the covering, a previously prepared covering hood (13) is placed over the entry to the outlet (3) and the outlet cavity is filled with the mass through the still open sliding gate nozzle (9). The covering hood (13) is put in place by means of a rod pushed through the outlet to a point above the border of the ladle; the covering hood (13) is clamped onto the end of the rod and stuck on in front of the outlet (3) by withdrawing the rod. The mass (20) is blown in through a tube by means of compressed air with the casting ladle horizontal. <IMAGE>
