The invention relates to a colour screen (flat panel), the active layer (3) of which, which is in each case arranged in front of an external protective glass, consists of transparent raster segments (10) with variable thickness which are in each case provided on their two plane-parallel partially reflective surfaces with transparent electrode layers (4, 5) so that white light passing through the active variable-thickness layer (10) emerges with a different colour depending on the activated thickness of the layer, utilising interference phenomena of the light. The active elements of the segments (10) can be piezoelectric crystals, macromolecules or spacings between the plane-parallel endfaces of two coaxially arranged optical fibres. The variable-thickness layer can be applied to an inner carrier glass plate (2) or directly to the inside of the external protective glass plate (1). <IMAGE>
