The invention relates to a seat for an office chair or the like, having a part (6) serving as a sitting area, a part (7) connected to the latter so as to be pivotable about a first pivot axis and serving as backrest, a support for both parts (6, 7) and a pivoting mechanism mounted on the said support and intended for at least one of the two parts. At least one of the two parts (6, 7) is of two-part construction and has a first section (6a, 7a) which is connected at its one end to the other part so as to be pivotable about the first pivot axis, and a second section (6b, 7b) which is connected to the other end of the first section so as to be pivotable about a second pivot axis and which is coupled via a lever mechanism (91 to 96) additionally to the other part (6, 7) in such a way that it assumes relative to the first section (6a, 7a) a pivoted position dependent on the relative pivoted position between the first section (6a, 7a) and the other part (6, 7) (Fig. 6).
