The device, which can be used in particular for pumping water, comprises a pump driven by an electric motor 14 and a unit of photocells 10 supplying the energy necessary for the operation of the motor. The motor 14 is an ac motor. The block of photocells 10 is provided with a bank of capacitors 12 for storing energy, which bank is connected to the motor by means 16 for discharging the capacitors into the motor when the energy stored in the capacitors reaches a given level. <IMAGE>
