The invention relates to an opto-electronic proximity detector in which the operator can vary the angle alpha of convergence towards the object 4 to be detected of the light beam transmitted and of the light beam received in order to obtain the required level of detection for an object situated at a defined distance D from the detector independently of its dimensions, of its reflecting power, of its surface finish or even of its colour. The detection according to the invention makes it possible to produce robust proximity detectors which are particularly well adapted to use in an industrial environment. <IMAGE>
