The first stage pump impeller (5) has radial folw fins on both the under (52) and upperside (51). The impeller disc is provided with a proturding ring (54) which runs in a groove (10) formed in the pump casing. The movement of water through the gap between the ring and the sides of the groove is halted due to the opposite centrifugal force action of the fins (51,52). During the pump operation the water remains static, preventing ingress of air.
