An advantageous process for producing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) useful as medicines, agricultural chemicals, food, feeds, and so forth, which comprises obtaining from microorganisms a gene coding for the biosynthetic enzyme group for EPA, connecting the gene and a vector to prepare a plasmid, transforming Escherichia coli with the plasmid, and culturing the transformant.
