A method for looking up VCI or VPI type values for an ATM-type switch is disclosed which can deal efficiently with both "special" values (0-31) and large values, without requiring an unduly large lookup table or complex hardware or lengthy software routines to map VCI values to lookup table addresses. If the VCI/VPI value is below a 1<SP>st</SP> threshold, relevant information is retrieved from a 1<SP>st</SP> table portion ("special") based on the VCI/VPI value. Otherwise, relevant information is retrieved from a 2<SP>nd</SP> table portion ("user") based on the VCI/VPI value and a configurable offset value. |
