A transmultiplexing device is provided having a first optical circulator and a multiplexer optically coupled to a feeder waveguide for feeding and demultiplexing a multiplexed signal into the a switching network and for multiplexing and extracting a demultiplexed signal from the switching network. A second optical circulator and a multiplexer optically coupled to a distributor waveguide are provided for feeding and demultiplexing a multiplexed signal into the a switching network and for multiplexing and extracting a demultiplexed signal from the switching network. The single pair of WDM devices act simultaneously as multiplexers and demultiplexers.
