PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical isolator equipped with a polarizer which is inexpensive and can be mass-produced, without degrading optical characteristics. SOLUTION: This optical isolator consists of a reflection type first polarizer 1, consisting of a photonic crystal, light-transmitting parallel glass plates 4, a parallel plate 45 deg. Faraday rotator 3 on which a magnetic field H is applied along the propagation direction of light, and a second polarizer 2 consisting of a photonic crystal, all arranged parallel to one another in this order and bonded with an adhesive or the like. The whole isolator is tilted from the optical axis of the incident light. The polarizers 1, 2 are arranged with the transmission polarizing directions, making a 45 deg. angle with each other. The photonic crystal consists of a multilayered film of a high refractive index medium and a low refractive index medium deposited on a substrate surface, having a specified profile on its surface, while maintaining the same profile as that of the substrate during deposition, and the photonic crystal has a large area and requires on optical polishing. |
