PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrodeless discharge lamp enhancing efficiency. SOLUTION: This electrodeless discharge lamp 1 accommodates a lighting circuit in a cover 3 fixing a base 2 and is provided with an arc tube 4 having a transparency on the cover 3. An envelope constructed of the cover 3 and the arc tube 4 has an external form approximate to the standard size of an incandescent lamp. A core 5 is mounted on the cover 3 and is wound with an excitation coil 6 for generating a high frequency magnetic field. A high frequency is generated by the lighting circuit and is supplied to the excitation coil 6, whereby the excitation coil 6 induces the high frequency magnetic field and the high frequency magnetic field emits light in the arc tube 4. When an effective radius of a plasma is the surface length of the plasma or longer, a coupling coefficient is also enhanced to have a constant value.
