The device comprises a motor ignition key, which stores an associated identification code, and a code reading device for reading the identification code from the ignition key, when it is inserted in an appropriate key cylinder on the motor vehicle. A code comparison device compares the identification code, which is determined by the code reading device, with a previously stored test code. A decision arrangement engages the motor ignition, if the identification code agrees with the test code, whereas at the occurrence of a discrepancy between the identification code and the test case, the motor ignition is only then enabled, if a door or an accelerator pedal of the vehicle was operated in a certain way.
