<p>A natural gas fueled internal combustion engine (66) which is operated at a slower than normal speed with load so as to enhance fuel burning conditions. By slowing engine speed with load substantially below conventional levels but at a level substantially above idling speeds, additional time is provided for the burning of fuel, thereby improving engine effectiveness, reducing fuel consumption for a given level of work, and reducing exhaust gas temperature thus avoiding the burning of valves. Reduced air and/or fuel temperature increases performance. In one embodiment, the air and fuel inlet (61) into the engine is insulated to prevent an increase in temperature to enhance performance. Also included in one embodiment is an improved heat exchanging system (69) whereby the cooling effect of expanding gas is employed to cool input air to the engine, further improving engine operating performance.</p> |
