The invention relates to a method whereby a user can carry out an automatic search for documents and content presentations stored in a data processing system. On the basis of a search request, the user is shown extracts of varying length from the documents. The length of the extract is set by the user and/or automatically selected depending on the number of documents foun d, and the extracts are taken from the document automatically, only parts of th e document which are highlighted by means of typography or text layout being reproduced in the extract.
