PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make a horizontal continuous heat treatment furnace which able to deal with considerable elongation of its effective furnace length and also a large variation of treating quantity with the identical furnace. SOLUTION: In the horizontal continuous heat treatment furnace for steel strip, a plurality of horizontal heating furnace units 2 and 10 are integrally connected. Each unit 2(10) comprises a directly firing type heating zone 4(12) to the charging end of which an exhaust gas preheating zone 3(11) is integrally connected, and comprises an exhaust gas duct 17a(17b) disposed at the charging sides of the preheating zone.
