An extract of Dryopteris crassirhizoma for prevention and treatment of acnes is provided to inhibit growth of Propionibacterium acnes making acnes severe, thereby eliminating side effects and improving long-term use safety. An extract of Dryopteris crassirhizoma is prepared by extracting Dryopteris crassirhizoma with water, hydrophilic organic solvent including methanol or ethanol or a mixture thereof, and optionally extracting the first extract of Dryopteris crassirhizoma with hexane. A composition for prevention and treatment of acnes comprises 0.001-20.0 wt.% of the first or second extract of Dryopteris crassirhizoma, and is formulated as soft lotion, astringent lotion, lotion, cream, emulsion foundation or soap.
