An apparatus and a method for receiving and transferring glass substrates are provided to minimize gripper movements and transfer processes, and thus reduce cycle time and increase productivity. An apparatus for receiving and transferring glass substrates(2,2a) includes a dual fork gripper(5) having two upper and lower individual fork grippers(7a), wherein the two fork grippers are movable relative to each other in a direction perpendicular to extension planes thereof. A method for receiving and transferring glass substrates to and from a receiving station such as a transfer station or storage cassette includes the steps of: charging the dual fork gripper into the receiving station; and transferring a glass substrate to the receiving station and receiving another glass substrate from the receiving station, through relative movements of each fork gripper in a direction perpendicular to the extension planes of the two fork grippers.
